Duke of Norfolk CofE Primary School

Safeguarding

Here at the Duke of Norfolk CE Primary School we have a culture where we make safeguarding everyone's responsibility, from the Senior Leadership Team to office staff, from volunteers to parents & carers and the children themselves.  Our prime responsibility at the Duke of Norfolk CE Primary School is to ensure that all of our children are safe.

Safeguarding is the action that is taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm.

Safeguarding means:

  • Protecting children from abuse and maltreatment
  • Preventing harm to children's health or development
  • Ensuring children grow up with the provision of safe and effective care
  • Taking action to enable all children and young people to have the best outcomes.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children.  To achieve our commitment, we will ensure the continuous development and improvement of robust safeguarding processes and procedures that promote a culture of safeguarding amongst our staff, governors and volunteers.

Safeguarding Roles at Dukes

The Designated Safeguarding leads at the Duke of Norfolk are:

Mrs Sophia Barker - Headteacher

Mrs Kate Hadfield - Sendco and Assistant Headteacher

Miss Emma Harvey - EYFS Lead and Assistant Headteacher

All adults who work at the Duke of Norfolk CE Primary School have a responsibility to read and understand the key safeguarding documents and policies and to act in accordance with the policy at all times.

All the staff at Dukes who work directly with children have read:

  • Part 1 of the 'Keeping Children Safe in Education' document
  • Safer Working Practice Guidance
  • Child Protection Policy
  • Whistleblowing Policy
  • Behaviour Policy
  • The guidance on 'Children Missing in Education'

We make it very clear who the Designated Safeguarding Leads are and what their responsibilities are.  Our staff are kept up-to-date on a regular basis through a programme of training. This includes our Designated Safeguarding Lead to ensure that knowledge is current.

Governors are asked to read the same documents.  They also must read Annex C about Online Safety and the section relating to Safer Recruitment.  The Designated Safeguarding Leads at the Duke of Norfolk present the Governors with updates to 'Keeping Children Safe in Education' on an annual basis as a part of their statutory duties.  Several of our governors are also 'Safer Recruitment' trained to support the school in the recruitment process.

Safeguarding in the curriculum

We are committed to inspiring, challenging and safeguarding our pupils, enabling them to become:

  • Successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve their potential
  • Confident, well-rounded individuals who are able to live safe, happy and healthy, fulfilling lives
  • Responsible citizens who will make a positive contribution, both socially and economically, to society.

This is best achieved when we all work together to support the development of the whole child.  We pride ourselves on knowing not just about our children's learning, but about them and their families; as individuals and valued members of our school and community.

We educate children about safeguarding in class through the curriculum, via Collective Worship and by having good relationships where the children trust the surrounding adults at Dukes.

We actively support the Government's Prevent agenda to counter radicalism and extremism.  We teach children about respect for oneself and others ina wide variety of contexts. We also promote awareness through a variety of activities, national awareness days and enrichment opportunities to ensure safe and positive lifestyles which lead to making good choices. These include Online Safety - including social media, road, water and fire safety and Bikeability.  In our PSHE lessons we follow the 'Jigsaw' scheme of work which encompasses many safeguarding topics and we participate in the Derbyshire SMILERS Programmes to promote excellent social, emotional and mental health.
