Reading

Reading at the Duke of Norfolk School

We teach reading in three main ways: shared reading where the teacher is reading with the whole class, group reading; where the teacher reads with a group of children and individual reading; where the teacher reads with individual children.

Your child will bring home a reading book every day.  We try to hear the children read twice a week in reception and will change their books three times a week.  We ask you to hear your child read every night as this helps them to practise the skills they are learning in school.

Individual Reading

We use Oxford Reading Tree as our main reading scheme and add in books from different schemes to broaden the children’s experience and understanding.

Group Reading

We use real books and books from Collins and Heinemann reading schemes.

Phonics

We use Read, Write Inc. as our phonics scheme.
