We are very lucky to have access to a wonderful outdoor learning space at The Dukes. The Reception children have free-flow access to the area, as part of the extended classroom, for large parts of the day. Our teaching assistants are very passionate about providing an outstanding outdoor experience, and set up endless creative combinations of activities each day for the children to enjoy. The environment is designed to encourage learning in all areas of the foundation stage curriculum, with physical development alongside creative play, and opportunities to extend and consolidate learning from inside the classroom. When outside, the staff interact with the children to further their learning, model 'quality' play and make subtle suggestions to develop skills and understanding.
We have recently had a portion of our woodland fenced, to further enhance our outdoor activities. This has been used as part of our 'Funky Fridays', during which all our children were given the opportunity to get very messy! We have played with shaving foam, mud, done giant painting, had a clothes washing day, splashed in bubbly puddles and generally had lots of wet, messy fun in full waterproof gear.
